Rule #1: The 50% Rule (Aggregate Working Load Limit)
The headline requirement: the combined strength of your tiedowns must equal at least half the weight of the cargo. This is measured by working load limit (WLL) โ the rated safe capacity marked on each chain, strap, or binder.
So a 10,000 lb load needs tiedowns whose working load limits add up to at least 5,000 lbs. Two important details:
- Use the working load limit, not the breaking strength. Breaking strength is higher; securement math is done on the safe rated WLL.
- How the tiedown is used matters. A direct tiedown and one that goes over the top of the load can contribute differently to the total.
The number to remember: total tiedown WLL โฅ 50% of cargo weight. It's the single most-cited securement calculation, and getting it wrong is both a violation and a genuine danger.
Rule #2: Minimum Number of Tiedowns
Beyond the strength math, there are minimum counts based on the length and weight of what you're hauling. The general baseline:
- An article up to 5 ft and up to 1,100 lbs: at least 1 tiedown.
- Up to 5 ft but heavier than 1,100 lbs, or between 5 and 10 ft: at least 2 tiedowns.
- Longer than 10 ft: 2 tiedowns for the first 10 ft, plus one more for each additional 10 ft (or fraction).
Specific commodities โ vehicles, heavy equipment, logs, coils, and more โ have their own additional rules on top of these general ones. Rule #3: Equipment Condition & Edge Protection
Even perfect math fails with bad gear. The rules require that:
- Tiedowns, chains, straps, and binders are in good working condition โ no cuts, frays, cracks, excessive rust, or damaged hooks. A strap at half strength doesn't secure at its rating.
- Edge protection is used where a strap could be cut or abraded by a sharp edge on the cargo.
- The load is inspected and re-checked during the trip โ securement can loosen as cargo settles and vibration works on the binders.
Why It Matters: The Real Stakes
Load securement isn't box-checking โ the consequences of getting it wrong are steep:
- Safety. A shifting or falling load can cause loss of control, road debris, and crashes that hurt your driver and others.
- Out-of-service & fines. Securement is one of the most common violation categories at roadside inspections. A bad load can mean fines, points against your carrier safety record, and the vehicle placed out of service until corrected โ direct downtime and cost.
- Liability. If an unsecured load causes damage or injury, the exposure is significant.
